Using This Module

This section will hopefully give a new user the basic navigation tools needed to make you visit both enjoyable and informative without a lot of difficulty. Please keep in mind that this section is in no way a complete how-to guide. If anyone has any suggestions at all on how I can improve this, please let me know!!

how the trees work...

Many of us use one genealogical program or another and nearly all of them have a very graphical look to them. You can see your family group sheets, display charts, etc. This module is much the same except that instead of it being on your computer, it is on the internet. This walk through will introduce you to the primary functions of the module. This will work best if you open a second window and follow these steps in that window while referencing these steps in this window.

  1. Open a new window to the TNG home page (this link will do it for you!)
  2. In the search box (top left of page), put "Williams" in for the Last Name and "Simon" in for First Name and press <enter>
  3. This will give you a list of the results that were found to match. On this list, click on the name of the Simon whose Person ID is "I01063" (from Bertie Co., NC in kit 7014)
  4. You are now at his family group sheet. Take a few minutes to orient yourself with the layout. This is where the meat and potatoes of the module lives. All of the pertinent information can be seen in one view.
  5. Let's look at the tabs. Click on "Ancestors" and you will find a dynamic chart. Clicking on any of the names will take you to the group sheet for that person.
  6. You will notice that there are little blue arrows pointing down beneath many of the boxes. If you hover your mouse over the arrow (not click!) a mini-group sheet for that person will open. And, you can click on the names in that sheet to go to their tree entry.
  7. Also note that in the red bar just above the chart, you can specify the number of generations you want to display, as well as various preferences regarding the chart.
  8. Now click on the "Descendants" tab...this will give you a listing of all the descendants of this individual. Notice that in many places there is a little white box with a minus sign in it. Click this box and that branch of this tree will collapse to this position. Try it!
  9. The next tab "Relationship" allows you to generate a box chart to show the relationship between this individual and any other person in your tree. To see it, click on the "Find" button under "Person 2" and search for Adrian Williams. Select my name and click "Calculate".
  10. The "Timeline" tab will allow you to show a timeline relationship between this person and up to four other people from ANY tree!
  11. The "GEDCOM" tab is for generating a GEDCOM file of this family. However, I have disabled the actual function in the module.
  12. The "Edit" module allows you to go into this individuals record and modify nearly any aspect of it.

Obviously there is much more functionality in the module but this walk through will be a very good intro to the system. Feel free to poke around and if you find anything wrong, please let me know so I can fix it!

where the people are...

There are three primary ways to get to the individual records of a tree:

  1. Browse the Pedigrees - this will take you to a listing of all the trees in the module that currently have data loaded in them. Clicking on the number in the "individuals" column will take you to the alphabetized listing of people in that particular tree.
  2. Clicking on "Surnames" - this will give you the master listing of surnames in the database and allow you to drill-down by tree and by surname, which will give you a list of people to choose from.
  3. Search for a name in the database. This will look through all trees for your info.

searching in a snap...

Do you know who you are looking for? Well then, you are already halfway there! Just use the Search box in the upper left hand corner (Surname on top!!) and you will instantly be shown all the records in the database that match your request.

If you need to be more specific in what you are looking for, use the "advanced search" feature. There, you can specify up to 16 different criteria to search against, including birth and death information as well as spousal information!
